This is the first in a series of posts about the 7 main Chakras. The Base Chakra deals with the life themes of survival and of meeting all our earthly needs. Read on to discover simple ways that you can begin to heal an imbalanced Base Chakra.
Our chakras are in an ever-changing state as they send and receive energy from within you, and around you - so regular healing methods must be practised to sustain a healthy chakra system.
Also known as the Root Chakra, or Muladhara in Sanskrit. The Base Chakra vibrates at the colour Red and is located at the base of the spine. This chakra deals with the life themes of survival and of meeting all our earthly needs. It manages our ability to feel grounded and safe in this life.
Having a balanced Base Chakra lays the foundation for creating balance within our other chakras. The Base Chakra is also intimately connected to our Feet Chakras and Earth Chakras that connect us to Mother Earth.
Emotional Issues: Survival, safety, security, finances, food, career.
Physical areas of the body: Spinal column, kidneys, colon, legs, knees, feet, bones, blood, muscles, adrenal glands.
Extra sense: Clairsentience - clear feeling. Your extra sensory information may come to you as a physical feeling in your body. i.e. the hair on your arms or the back of your neck may stand up.
Imbalanced: If your Base Chakra is out of balance you will struggle with feeling safe and secure. This can manifest as fear and anxiety regarding your physical safety, your job security, your financial security. It can be expressed through eating disorders, hoarding, constipation, arthritis, adrenal fatigue, low energy levels and problems with areas governed by the Base Chakra listed above. You may resist change because you feel unsafe. You may feel that there is never enough. As you worry about past or future problems you may feel spaced out as your energy isn’t grounded in the present, this in turn can cause you to be clumsy and you may find that you bump into things, stub your toes, drop things etc.
Balanced: A balanced Base Chakra will have you feeling energised, grounded, safe and at ease with all of life.
Base Chakra Healing Methods
To heal the Base Chakra we need to address feelings of safety and security. Think back to the first 7 years of your life, if your needs weren’t consistently met you may now be dealing with beliefs around scarcity, safety and security. Perhaps a more recent event has caused you to feel unsafe in this world.
Working towards releasing these beliefs through counselling, forgiveness, meditation, or energy healing methods such as Reiki and chakra healing, can really help release limiting beliefs and heal this chakra.
Here are a few other suggestions, remember to hold the intention for healing and perform the activity mindfully:
Colour The colour red is associated with the Base Chakra. Wear red - perhaps a red jacket would enhance your feelings of safety. Surround yourself with red home furnishings - red cushions may help you feel supported. Fill a vase with red Roses - as they bloom imagine your Base Chakra opening just as naturally and beautifully. Stop to smell your roses often - you will be reminded to return to the present moment, grounding your energy.
Activities Doing things that connect you to nature like gardening or hiking, swimming in the ocean. Walk barefoot on the sand. Skim stones at the lake. Hug a tree. Smell freshly cut grass. Walk your dog. Dance in the rain. Watch a thunder storm with awe. Move your body - run, dance, tai chi, yoga. Cook a nutritious meal. Enjoy a picnic at the park - sit under a tree, lay on the grass and watch the clouds. Enjoy a foot rub with coconut oil.
Mantra As you sit in meditation you may chant the mantra LAM. This is the Bija Mantra of the Base Chakra and will allow you to connect to this chakra and focus your healing intention upon it.
Affirmations Create your own positively framed affirmation that is specific to your issues. Chant it during meditation or throughout your day. Some examples may be “I am safe, secure and supported”, “Life loves me.”
Food Eating red food such as red capsicum, strawberries, red kumara, tomatoes and apples will help this chakra. Enjoy a comforting, hot, bowl of vegetable soup. Eating food from the earth is a great way to get grounded. Ideally it should be organic and locally produced to maintain the highest frequency.
Crystals Grounding and protective crystals are usually black, brown or red like the earth. Obsidian, Smokey Quartz, Tiger’s Eye and Jasper are great for healing your Base Chakra and are readily available at crystal shops. Each crystal has it’s own unique healing properties so it’s worth looking into each one to find the crystal that will work best with your particular issues.
