The Initiation you receive into Reiki is a life-changing ceremony that formally marks your acceptance into a community of other compassionate Reiki practitioners. This sacred Reiki ceremony provides an “initial" heightened experience of your True Self - Reiki, that illuminates your path.
Reiju allows us to glimpse our True Self, then we can remember it again and again in our daily life. The more we remember it, the more we will embody our True Self.
Frans Stiene - Reiki Master Teacher
After many years of spiritual training and on the verge of death, Mikao Usui experienced enlightenment on Mount Kurama which awakened his spiritual gift of healing. This was his personal, sacred initiation experience which inspired him to create the system of Reiki and teach it to others, so that we could reach enlightenment and heal others too.
Usui had built a strong foundation from years of spiritual practice which facilitated his enlightenment experience. But he recognised that most people do not have the desire to undertake such dangerous methods in their pursuit of satori, so he found a way to share his experience of illumination with his students.
He called it Reiju. Simply translated Reiju means "spiritual blessing". The Reiki Initiation Ceremony emulates Usui's illumination experience. It awakens us to Reiki - our true self, and is one of the most special and unique elements of Reiki. By awakening the connection to our true selves through Initiation, we experience our own limitlessness. This is why Reiki practitioners feel energised rather than depleted after sharing Reiki with others.
While it is also known as an Attunement in some Reiki schools, Initiation is a more accurate term. Reiki is the spiritual energy present in all things so we don't need to be "attuned" to it, it is not something outside of ourselves - we already are Reiki at our core! Remember Usui Sensei wisely declared "you exist in the universe, and the universe exists in you!"
The Initiation Ceremony provides an “initial" heightened experience of our true self/Reiki. During the ceremony the Reiki teacher fully embodies Reiki, reaching and maintaining a higher state of consciousness. The Reiki student experiences an expansion of awareness and is energetically taken to the place within themselves where they remember their Reiki.
It's through the illumination of Reiki that we catch a glimpse of our soul - and just like Mikao Usui we begin to remember our potential, our natural gifts and talents, our purpose and who we really are. With this wisdom we begin to live differently. We find that the initiation has marked the emergence of a new phase in our lives.
Once initiated, Reiki actively starts clearing our energy pathways so that even more Reiki can flow. But the Initiation Ceremony is just the beginning. To fully integrate the experience and ground the truth we have glimpsed, we must diligently practice the other elements of the Reiki system. The solid foundation we create with regular practice enhances our Reiki flow so we may offer meaningful healing to others.

Symptoms are usually mild and you can help shift the energy by: drinking plenty of water, resting when you need to, crying when you need to, expressing your emotions safely with someone, and practicing Reiki meditations along with self-Reiki daily.
